Q&A with Dr. Ruiz

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

Really any Pixar movie! Grew up watching them.

What is your favorite children's book?

Goodnight Moon , hand won! Soothing, rhythmic and gentle, with a repetitive structure that creates a comforting atmosphere that helps children settle down for sleep. It is a timeless classic that turns the simple act of saying goodnight into a warm, calming ritual, making it a perfect choice for reading with young patients and families. Definitely read this one with my daughter for a while.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

Lego fan!

Who is your greatest inspiration?

My greatest inspiration has to be my parents, who instilled in me the value of hard work and compassion despite adversity, and my patients, whose resilience and joy in the face of challenges constantly motivate me to be the best pediatrician I can be.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Enjoying time with my daughter and wife. Traveling, exploring new places, Disney trips and concerts!

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

Growing up as a first-generation Mexican American, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices my working-class parents made to provide for our family. Navigating the path to medical school as the first in my family to pursue a career in medicine taught me the value of perseverance, a quality I see reflected every day in the incredible resilience of children. I am deeply passionate about pediatric care because I believe in the power of preventative health to set children on a lifelong path toward wellness. My approach is centered on teamwork; I view the parent-physician relationship as a true partnership, where we work together to support the unique needs of every child and ensure they have the best possible start in life.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

I pride myself on a patient-centered approach that prioritizes active listening, ensuring parents feel heard while I integrate evidence-based medicine into our care plan. My practice is built on direct engagement with my patients; I make it a priority to connect with children on their level and ensure that teens feel fully informed and included in conversations regarding their own health. I also place a strong emphasis on holistic care, taking the time to thoroughly understand each child’s unique routines, including their sleeping and eating habits, to provide well-rounded guidance. Furthermore, I am committed to empowering pre-teens and school-aged children by encouraging them to take an active role in their visits. By giving them the opportunity to answer questions directly, I help them build self-confidence and a sense of independence, fostering a comfortable, trusting environment for the entire family.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

Welcome and attend to children with special needs including distinct genetic syndromes, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Trisomy 21 and cerebral palsy.
